It’s been a while since I have posted. I have really struggled to find inspiration to work on dancing. We go to the Friday night dance and everything, but last week we were making mistakes and that was a major bummer. It’s sometimes hard for me to practice when I don’t have something in mind that I want to practice. You ever have that feeling? It’s like you know that you need to work but you are not sure what to work on. That’s where I have been lately.
Finally I have something to work on. James and I spent a lot of last night working on phrasing. I think that this is really what we need in order to bump us to the next level. What does this entail? Well, listening to a lot of music and dissecting it. This works out pretty well for us. Because I am a musician, this is something that I do naturally. Because James is a scientist, he is very analytical. We enjoy talking about the inner workings of music, but it is also a challenge for us to apply that to dancing.
This is something that we are hoping to spend a lot of our practice focused on. We are going to dance in my school’s talent show (cheesy I know) and we need to spend time getting something together anyways, it might as well be beneficial for our dancing.
There are a few new moves that we are going to explore as well. One of the is called the backpack. It seems pretty easy, and would be a fun way to exit the dance floor in competition. It’s not necessary to our dance development, but will give us another fun thing to have in the pocket. The one thing that sets us apart from some dancers right now is that we like aerials. We haven’t really done anything too complicated, but we have fun learning them. Obviously there are other people that do them too, but it is less common. We also want to work on a barrel roll jump. It seems like it won’t take much to put together.
How do you practice?
I would like to start a practice routine, so there is no question of where to start. With phrasing in mind, my goal is to set up and get into a practice routine. Soon there will be updates from our dancing excursions in EUROPE! I am looking forward to learning new things and being inspired.
