Thursday night was UNO swing club. We had ONE leader show up, so James and I practiced the Tranky Doo, and a few other things. I wasn’t the best “leader” in the sense that I wasn’t completely with it at swing club. I hope that we can get more people to attend the swing club. I think it will be outstanding to have a large group of UNO swing dancers. I want to look at a few ways to to amp up excitement in the music department since I am still a student there. Christy and I were talking about a Lindy Bomb on the campus. It would be great to figure out something to make that work.
Friday night was a pretty good night of dancing. It started off not so great. I feel like I have so much to think about right now, that sometimes I get caught up in one thing like working on my turns or working on not tensing my right arm and forget that I am also being led in moves that I might not know. I tend to fail a lot of moves when I get into that place.
I had a great dance with Ben Peet to start the night off. He is a lead that challenges me to just follow, which I really appreciate. I also had a few great dances with Nate. I am finally getting to a place where I can follow what people throw at me. I did not fall apart when my arms went out of the “normal” lindy spot, which is a personal success. I also danced with quite a few other people, and so did James. It was a unique night, and really great in that way.
Dancing with James was also great, for different reasons. It is sometimes a challenge when you are working towards a goal. Trying to really elevate your dancing means that sometimes you fail. We danced to fast songs, we danced to a slow song (I should be more clear about my intentions sometimes). And, by the end of the night James and I had a couple of great dances that were a pretty fast tempo (something that we have really been working towards). We are trying to get away from just doing lots of swing outs. I can’t imagine being a leader and having to come up with moves before we execute them. We are getting there.
This weekend should be pretty chill dancing wise, but dancing nonetheless. Today I would like to do the Tranky Doo and the Big Apple. I want to make sure that I still have the big apple (and I am sure James does too). Tomorrow can be whatever happens as far as dancing. I would like to utilize what we learned in Christian and Jenny’s class on solo practicing. And, I would like to get to a point where I can do solo jazz or charleston competitions (which is crazy because Charleston used to be my least favorite). SO, that might be something fun to do on Sunday.
