This weekend was an outstanding weekend.
I know I have missed a few days, but I actually made a goal and danced every day in the last week. Ballroom classes Wednesday night, UNO swing club Thursday night, and the Friday night dance were the days I missed. The Friday night dance was a pretty good time. We were working on some things, so it was at times frustrating (working on moves and failing drives us crazy :)) But, all in all, got some good dances in.
Now Saturday and Sunday were the highlight of the dancing days. We had the winter weekend with Christian and Jenny. A weekend full of classes and dancing. I will try to write down everything we learned, but I know I will miss some things.
Beginning Lindy Hop- I missed this class 😦
Intermediate Lindy Hop- We worked a lot of a promenade step and turning that into the swing out. It was basically a continuation of the first class. I will ask James to blog about these first two classes 🙂
St. Louis Shag- the footwork for this style of dancing is pretty simple. triple step kick, triple step kick. It was pretty easy to pick up quickly, and I would love to explore this style more. It seems like something I would love. We also learned kick throughs (which used to be my arch nemesis) and the shag version of fall off the log. I will get videos of these moves up this week.
How to Practice solo- This was just a fun class to be in. I can’t say I didn’t learn anything new, because I haven’t really put moves in to a sequence before, but it was not difficult. My jazz dancing background makes this part of my dancing pretty quick to pick up on. I also got some great ideas for how to practice moves that I need to work on. I would love to put this into my practice routine. Start with just some solo practicing before James and I start dancing.
More St. Louis Shag- I missed this class too… huge disappointment for me. James will update
Tranky Doo Part one- I missed the first part of this class, but walked in after about 15 minutes. I caught on pretty quickly, but the class moved very fast. If I feel inspired I might break down the steps some day and write them here.
Tranky Doo Part two- In this class we learned the rest of the tranky too routine. The first section that we worked on was pretty challenging. But, there were some sections in the second half that were pretty easy, like 4 eight counts of walking around in a circle, and six jazz squares.
Here’s the routine in full. I believe that these people are from Atomic… or at least Shesha is. I hope to get a video of James and I doing it up this week. I also need a video of us doing the big apple. I am hoping that I don’t get confused between the two routines but that could happen.
Advanced Lindy- This class was awesome! We started by learning Charleston swing outs. This took some time to get down, but it was really fun. It has a completely different feel than regular swing outs. After we learned that, we learned how to to a tuck turn and then went from that into tandem. After doing those moves for a while we learned how to make that go into tandem Charleston. from tandem we worked on a send out and then into a crazy come around catch thing. Please feel free to edit any of this that may be wrong 🙂
Private Lesson- James and I took a private with Christian and Jenny after all of the classes. It was nice to work on things that we have been wondering about for a really long time. We learned another style of fast lindy hop. That brings our total to 4 different ways to dance fast. I really like this rock step kick step style. It was also a good place to work on some swing out fundamentals. The biggest thing that I need to focus on is not keeping tension in my right arm. This not only affects the way that swing outs feel, but has also helped me develop crutches in some of my turns. I think that by loosening up my arm I will be more able to do triple steps, or step steps while I am turning. James was working a lot on his right arm during the catch part of the swing out. We were really focusing on fine tuning some little things, but I won’t bore you with any more of the details!
Here are some goals for the week- go over the tranky do, go over the big apple, just dance to music while working on some of the concepts that we went over, practice all of the new stuff.
Lots of goals for lots of dancing 🙂
