So far I have made it to day four of blogging every day.
Last night was the Omaha Jitterbugs dance. It was another fun night of dancing, and I got quite a lot of dancing in. James made a list of all of the moves that he knows, and we were going through as many as we could. Of course we did not get all of them in, but did a fair amount of them.
I had a lot of great dances with people who weren’t James. This was a welcome change from the normal. I am not very good about asking people to dance. For some reason I have an aversion to that.
One thing I felt really great about was interestingly something that James didn’t feel very good about. We had one particularly fast dance. It wasn’t a great dance, but I didn’t fall apart. I can easily remember when I would completely fall apart. We did a few swing outs with the alternate footwork that we learned at Atomic. then went in to some charleston, which I found to be very fun. I love Charleston. I love hand to hand Charleston. It’s crazy because I also remember a time when hand to hand was very hard for me. I even recovered on some mistakes. That made me feel the best. I feel like being able to smooth over making a mistake is very handy and important. I think that sometimes this is what makes the dancing good. I will never do all of the moves perfectly, but being able to keep right up with the leader no matter what is important.
We did work on the big apple. I had a bit of a failure moment. James moved me from one side of the circle to the other during the spank the baby move. It was necessary, but definitely got me confused as to where I was in the circle. But, besides that it went pretty well.
I am having some issues figuring out some turning techniques. I am really struggling with breaking my old dancer ways. This is something I am hoping to be working on from here on out in my dancing. Things like this come up as I get more and more into dancing. Many years of dancing in a specific way can sometimes be hard to break. The first roadblock was my arms. Dancers have pretty arms, and having to bend my arms in turns is something I have had a hard time doing. The new thing is putting my foot down during the turns. Swing turns seem to be more like Chainé turns and less like point turns. Practice Practice Practice.
Not sure what’s on the dancing agenda for the day. Hopefully we will go through some more moves from the list among other things.
