So I have been caught up in the busy-ness of this week. Lots of things to do. Here’s a little recap:
Wednesday- This was a day of having nothing specific to do. James and I put on a dancing with the stars workout video and did the swing and jive portions. I totally know why this is a workout video! The steps are pretty accurate, and they really get your heart rate pumping. I feel like it also makes me more comfortable with solo dancing because it basically gives you a solo “routine”. It’s a lot like Zumba but for swing dancing. The jive portion is significantly harder than the swing portion. We didn’t even attempt the quickstep portion (that was way too hard for me!)
We were pretty tired after doing these two videos. We only briefly worked on the steps we learned in the big apple the day before. I practiced them quite a bit at school, but it’s always better to work with a partner, that way you can have someone with you making sure that you are both doing it right. Plus, it’s a partner dance so it’s great to have your partner there.
Yesterday was a great day of dance. James has been taking classes at Simply Ballroom for a while, and he got me interested in taking classes back in October. So far we had been doing latin dances, and I don’t like those very much. I do have fun, because it is a challenge, but it’s not my favorite. Yesterday the classes were intermediate waltz and beginning West Coast Swing. Hooray! I was a little worried about intermediate waltz. I have only ever danced waltz with James, so I am not that familiar with the dance, but I am very familiar with waltz form, so that helped. We worked on a step they were continuing from last week. A twinkle with a weave ending with a twinkle. This is a twelve count step. I will try to get a video up of it today so that I don’t forget it!
Beginning west coast was fun. It was really simple, but Alex gave alternate foot variations. One for the men and one for the women. I wanted to challenge myself so I learned them both. I am glad to be learning this dance from the beginning. I think I may end up liking it more than lindy hop. It’s more upright and feels natural to me.
Next week the Wednesday classes are Samba and East Coast. I asked Alex if I could learn east coast as a leader and he thought that would be a good idea. I am really looking forward to that. I think starting lessons as a leader will give me a new challenge, and also be the best way for me to learn. I think I would be bored with east coast otherwise.
Tonight we are going to the dance at Omaha Jitterbugs. The UNO jazz band will be performing so that will be a nice change. I am hoping that we work on phrasing a bit. I also want to review the big apple, and go over some of the new steps we learned in California and put them into practice. So far, dancing every day, while it hopefully improves my dancing skills, it also improves my mood. I don’t care what I am dancing, as long as I am doing it. I am glad that I have a partner to do it with. James and I have very different strengths. My background has given me the ability to pick up moves pretty quickly. James has great insight on the form of the dances. He gives me pointers on how to hold my frame and wear to put my head. I like being in a place where we can help each other and make our dancing better.
Hopefully I will have some great updates after tonight! and some videos too…
